St. Paul, Minn. (KMSP) - The Minnesota Department of Health is set to announce Monday morning the two medical marijuana manufacturers who will supply Minnesota residents struggling with debilitating conditions.

MDH commissioner Ed Ehlinger will host an 8:30 a.m. news conference in St. Paul naming the parties who will become registered manufacturers responsible for growing, processing and distributing medical cannabis products as part of the state's new medical cannabis program.

The manufacturers will also extract the organic compounds to exacting standards, which is the core of Minnesota's medical marijuana law -- a study to see how medical cannabis works and how effective it can be.

3 responsibilities

1. Growing the state's supply of medical cannabis

2. Processing it into pill or liquid form

3. Distributing the medications through a network of eight distribution sites

Certified patients

The new statute will only allow certified patients suffering from the following conditions to access marijuana for medicinal use:

- Cancer

- Crohn's disease

- Glaucoma

- ALS

- AIDS

- Hepatitis C

- Tourette's

- Seizure disorders

- Multiple sclerosis

- Terminal illness
