Missouri May Consider Medical Marijuana After Recent Ballot Wins

Voters across the country passed a drug policy milestone in November by approving medical marijuana in three new states, making the drug legal in most of the U.S. for medical purposes. Now, some patients are urging state legislators to give them access to the drug in Missouri.

"Kids with intractable epilepsy shouldn't have to wait for the FDA to approve medical cannabis," said Heidi Rayl, whose son suffers from uncontrollable seizures. "After the results of this election, I'm more hopeful than ever that our state will move to give suffering Missourians access to medical marijuana."

Missouri has already granted licenses to two cannabis growers, but they are restricted to low-THC plants and can only produce one type of anticonvulsant cannabis oil for people with intractable epilepsy. Activists hope to remove those restrictions and expand access to patients with terminal-illnesses and other seriously debilitating conditions.

Last week, the Missouri Prosecutors Association asked the Missouri Association of Counties to pass a resolution in opposition to medical marijuana for people with terminal-illnesses, but the resolution failed after several elected officials explained that the drug had alleviated the suffering of friends and family members in other states.

Law enforcement officials praised the move, saying police officers prefer to focus on more serious, violent offenses.

"I'm glad the MAC stood with the overwhelming majority of Missourians in rejecting the continued prohibition on medical cannabis," said Mike Sharp, Jackson County Sheriff. "Our state needs to take action to show compassion to suffering Missourians so that police officers can focus on locking up dangerous criminals."

Some activists are already seeking to get medical cannabis on the 2018 ballot in Missouri, with an initiative petition already filed with the Secretary of State.
