Backers of the effort to put medical marijuana before Missouri voters believe they have the support needed to get it done. They'll be in Jefferson City, Mo., today to officially start the process.

"New Approach Missouri" will file initiative petitions with the secretary of state's office at 10 a.m. Its goal is to gather enough signatures to get the measure on the November 2016 ballot.

Old Monroe Police Chief Larry Kirk is among those saying it's time Missouri joins the 23 states that have already legalized medical cannabis.

"If you have a chance to help someone to ease pain, to ease suffering, then that's something we need to look at as being something we should be acceptable of," Kirk says.

Missouri currently allows only limited use of medical marijuana for epilepsy patients.
Backers say polling is showing strong support for the idea.
