OCEAN CITY -- A Pennsylvania mother caught smoking marijuana with her two daughters in an Ocean City hotel room received a judge's rebuke and a 30-day suspended sentence in Circuit Court on Monday.

Pamela E. Traugott, 46, was sentenced by District Court Judge R. Patrick Hayman, who seemed slightly amazed that a mother would share an illegal puff with her 19- and 25-year-old daughters.

"There used to be a slogan that the family that prays together stays together," Hayman said from the bench before sentencing. "I'm trying to think of what the family that smokes together does. Probably gets in trouble."

The charges against Traugott stemmed from a May 19 stay at the Carousel Resort Hotel at 118th Street. Deputy State's Attorney E. Scott Collins said hotel security called police at about 8 p.m. after smelling burning marijuana outside Traugott's hotel room. When police officers entered the room, he said, they found drugs which Traugott admitted to smoking.

Traugott's daughters, Amy and Allison, were in court Monday but were not prosecuted or sentenced. The state only charged Pamela Traugott with possession of marijuana.

"She was down here smoking dope with her daughters. That's why this is being treated differently, your honor," Collins said to the judge Monday.

Traugott told Hayman she has used drugs infrequently since the 1980s. "Once the daughters reached the age of adults, we started doing it together," she said Monday.

The suspended sentence spared Hayman any time in jail but included a $300 fine and $55 in court costs.
