Dismissed continued –
I am going to go through Air Crew Training in Jacksonville Florida quick
I had no car, I had no pot and I was put in suspended animation buffing floors till the next class started. 2 months of buffing floors. It was good work, mindless and rewarding in a weird way.
When school started I kept my head down and just worked learned and did well until I almost drowned in the helicopter dunk, got out by my skinny. I lived on hot dogs and canned food that came out of a vending machine...hot.
The only memorable thing I did was take a three day to Arkansas. One of my classmates had a car. He was going home for the weekend and invited myself and another “northern” boy to join him. We arrived at his house and I was taken back by the poverty in the neighborhood. I had never seen anything like it even in the hardest hit areas in the cities and towns I had lived in. The house had no windows or doors. There were no beds and some dirty curtains on the hole where a window should be in the room the three of us shared. I was glad I brought a sleeping bag. It was too hot to sleep in it but it softened the floor a bit. We went out to a club that looked just like the house, no doors or windows. I danced with a girl so big my arms never made it half way around her waist
As we drove out of his neighborhood I took a hard look. It was mind numbing, I obviously still think about it.
I did well in school and it was time to go. I hooked up with 4 other squids and we bought a van for 500 bucks. We took turns driving night and day with only snack and piss stops... northbound

I know what you are saying about your friends town and home seeming destitute but I bet it was the greatest place for him to return too(home).
when I hitched across the states I ended up in Mississippi for awhile in near the same conditions. A happier bunch of folks you will never see. Oblivious to the world they never saw.
Hell when I was on the carny down there, we were the thing they lived and saved all year for.
