Colorado - A Nederland medicinal marijuana store has set itself up to become the first recreational pot shop in Boulder County, the Daily Camera reported Saturday. The Canary's Song, located at 1 W. 1st St., is awaiting approval on its license application, which will be presented to the Nederland Board of Trustees Tuesday evening, said the Boulder newspaper. If the license is approved, the dispensary can start selling retail cannabis as soon as Wednesday, though manager Katie Tayloe said the store's owner is aiming for Feb. 1 to begin business.

Tayloe said the dispensary plans to maintain its medical marijuana license, and will create a physical division from the recreational business so it can still provide product to customers under 21 with medical cards. She added that the store is excited to extend its offerings into the recreational market, as it could be a great fiscal boost to the business. According to the Daily Camera, The Canary's Song is the only medicinal dispensary in Boulder County to have received its state license to sell recreational marijuana – a store is required to have both local and state licenses – but Karing Kind may not be far behind.

Owner Dylan Donaldson said he may have his local license in place by the end of January and his state license in February. Liz Donaghey from Boulder County's Marijuana Licensing Authority reported that The Growing Kitchen is also in the process of receiving a county license. She added that Boulder County hasn't received any other requests at this time. The reason for the delay on recreational marijuana businesses in the Boulder-area is that Boulder and Louisville did not start accepting applications for licenses during the first round back in the fall, reported the Boulder newspaper.
