Need help with soil drainage

I am growing outdoors this year and the ground is very hard sand stone type dirt. It does leech water but fairly slow.

My question is can I fill the bottom of the holes with drain rock and then cover the rock with cloth and top it off with my potting soil?

Or should I put my plants in planters above ground so they can drain?

I am going to dig a test hole tomorrow and fill it with water to see how fast or slow the water leeches into the ground.

Anyone with experience and comments would be GREAT!

I wouldn't mess with rocks,
I spend too much time raking them out, to be putting any back in
Just dig the hole a little deeper.
3 deep x 2 wide is more than enough, all potting soil.
