It turns out that there may be more women smoking pot than previously thought. A new report from the Cannabis Consumers Coalition (CCC) says that just as many women consume cannabis as men. This result is dramatically different from other reports that usually find that men dominate the cannabis consumption crowd. CCC's survey still had men leading with 53%, but the gap is more narrow than previously thought. “Although there is a disparity among reports of the gender of the cannabis consumers, the importance of the female consumer is not negligible,” said Larisa Boliver, author of the report. "The most profound finding in our report was that that majority of respondents were women by over a 15% margin."
The new survey from Cannabis Consumers Coalition showed that more women than men responded to the survey.
She noted that a Headset report found that 68% of men were cannabis consumers, which puts the ratio closer to 2:1. However, a Gallup Poll from 2013 also reported a closer gap with 8% of men and 6% of women saying they used cannabis daily. The CCC survey was anonymous and covered all states, not just states with legalized marijuana.
A narrowing gender gap would mirror other national trends and statistics in traditional markets. Specifically that women make a majority of the purchasing decisions in households.
The idea that there are more women involved in cannabis than previously thought is demonstrated in the C-suite as well. In 2015, Marijuana Business Daily noted that 36% of the executive level positions in the cannabis industry are held by women.
Boliver said, “ With so many female cannabis consumers and business leaders, businesses need to ensure that their marketing strategies appeal to women when developing both business-to-consumer and business-to-business marketing strategies.” This is already happening as brands like Suicide Girls has released their own line of vape cartridges with mood descriptions like Chill, Hustle and Zero, which lessens the munchie side effect.
