Madurai, May 14: A Catholic nun taking classes for prisoners at the central jail here got into trouble when she took a packet containing ganja and a sim card into the jail premises, believing that it contained medicines for an inmate.

According to prison officials, Sr Cherry Beena was approached by an old lady last evening, introducing herself as a relative of an inmate, afflicted with AIDS.

The old lady asked the nun to hand over the packet which, she said, contained medicines for the inmate.

Sr Beena, who had been taking classes regularly for the inmates for over one year, took the packet into the jail, officials said today.

When she was frisked, the packet was found to contain ganja and sim card.

During interrogation, the nun told that she was not aware of the contents in the packet and it was given to her at the entrance of the jail.

The officials said that they have taken a statement from the nun and left the decision on further action to the convent authorities.

They also said that the social workers coming to the prison would be thoroughly frisked in future, he said. (Agencies)
