Akron, Ohio - City Council on Monday unanimously approved legislation that puts a one-year freeze restricting the use and sale of medical marijuana.
Akron joins a growing list of communities putting moratoriums on medical marijuana, which became legal in Ohio last week.
However, it could be one or two years before patients can legally buy it as state legislators continue to work on the details on how it will be cultivated, sold and used.
Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan, who introduced the legislation, cited this lack of details for proposing the one-year freeze.
"The Ohio Legislature legalized medical marijuana this summer, but has yet to issue rules and regulations regarding licensing and physician recommendations," Horrigan said in a news release.
"I introduced a one-year moratorium on the cultivation, processing or sale of medical marijuana in Akron in order to thoughtfully and diligently study the effect of the new law on our neighborhoods and determine the best path forward. This moratorium does not affect the ability of patients to legally use medical marijuana in Akron with a physician recommendation."
Several communities in Northeast Ohio have issued or are considering moratoriums on medical marijuana, including Avon Lake, Broadview Heights, Brookpark, Brecksville and Strongsville.
