The Ohio Department of Commerce received 185 applications from businesses identifying locations throughout the state as potential marijuana cultivation facilities.
Eight locations in Stark County are in the running to become possible medical marijuana grow sites, state documents show.
The Ohio Department of Commerce received 185 applications from businesses identifying locations throughout the state as potential marijuana cultivation facilities. The names of the interested businesses were released in July, and portions of the applications – which give the addresses of proposed grow sites – were released on the department's website last week.
Next month, the state is expected to announce the locations that will receive licenses to begin growing medical marijuana. There will be up to 12 locations that may be up to 25,000 square feet, and there will be another group of up to 12 locations that may be up to 3,000 square feet.
The state's medical marijuana program will be in operation by September 2018, two years after House Bill 523 established the program. The law allows people with conditions such as AIDS, cancer or Alzheimer's disease to use medical marijuana at the recommendation of a licensed physician.
The applications show there are eight Stark County locations listed as proposed grow sites. All of the companies applying for grow sites were established between April and June of this year, state records indicate.

There also are a few businesses with Stark County addresses that filed applications for out-of-county grow sites. Two list a registered agent service on Market Avenue N. as their addresses, and Fire Rock Ltd from Jackson Township also applied to put grow sites in Akron and Columbus.
Filing an application included a non-refundable fee of $20,000 for larger facilities and $2,000 for smaller facilities. Obtaining a license initially will cost $180,000 for larger facilities or $18,000 for smaller facilities.
Canton, Massillon and Alliance this year adjusted their local ordinances to allow for medical marijuana businesses.
