Old Guy & Hopefully New Tricks

So, I introduced myself in the "Introduce Yourself" forum, and I guess the next step to giving back is to start a grow journal. Warning...at first, there may be a little duplication to what I have already posted. By way of background, I have only grown once before, sometime around 1978 if I remember correctly, and even that may not be correct. It was an attempt with some bag seed, and although 40 years ago, I used the wet paper towel method to germinate. The grow took place in my attic with an old florescent light fixture and window light. Plants grew very leggy and tall, and I immediately harvested when I saw white flowers...you can guess the outcome.

Fast forward to June, 2018, and I thought I'd try again. Of course, with the advantage of the internet and great sites such as this, it was just a matter of time before my order of 3 WW autos arrived. Used the paper towel method, but only one seed germinated. Seedsman was nice enough to send replacements which should be here next week.

Seeds arrived June 20, one germinated and was planted on June 23, and now it's been one week. Although I realize that I should have started earlier since I am growing outside, I should still have at least 12 good growing weeks until the end of September, and hope to get the replacement seeds along with five Northern Lights seeds I have ordered in the ground around the second week in July.

As you can see from the pictures, I used a small, clear single drink cup with holes in the bottom as a starter pot. My next starter pots will be much larger cottage cheese containers. I also have black, three gallon pots for the main grow, and will transplant as soon as the root systems develop.

I am using Nature's Care Raised Bed Organic soil which was all I could find locally without added time release fertilizer. I also got some Maine Coast potting soil which I am using on the top to stabilize the stem.

My one plant gets sunlight all day, and I am being mindful of drying, especially because the starter pot is so small. I water around the edge of the starter pot, and today, since the temps are close to 100F, I briefly soaked the bottom 1/3 of the pot in a glass of water to get the soil a little more saturated.

Currently, my plant is hanging with her friends in other plantings pots on my deck, far away from prying eyes.

So that's it so far...

Grow onward...

looks happy enuf,, cheers

the soaking the bottom will be useful just before transplanting,, will help keep the soil together during the transition,,

WARNING! Get those baby Autos into a deep pot immediately! Autos switch to flower when their taproots hit bottom. I had this happen to me and I ended up with a 7" plant with lotsa buds on it. Yes, I had transplanted her into her big girl pot, but it was too late. She WAS a pretty little thing, however.

BTW, Dave: I'm 70 and got into growing when it became legal here in Alaska.

Just a few update pics...

Just a few update pics...WW is at the beginning of week 7 (last 2 pics) and NL is at the beginning of week 5 (first 5 pics). I was experiencing very slight leaf munching from some unknown critter(s), my best guess being caterpillars, and treated the sisters with a very mild mix of neem oil which seems to have controlled the issue. Never was able to find or see the culprits, even checking in the middle of the night with a flashlight (good thing my neighbors are mostly asleep by 9:00 p.m :)

Just an update...harvested my WW auto grow at 10 weeks, and after dry and trim, but before cure, I wound up with about 22g; not very impressive, but this was my first grow in plain organic garden soil, outside, 3 gallon pots, and minimum nutes. I would rate quality as a 4-5, but hey, I'm learning. Still have my NL growing, with about another week to go, and yield should be about the same or a little less per plant. Pic is of main cola while drying.

So, I just want to update and finalize my 2018 grow journal. I grew 5 NL and 1 WW auto, all from seed, outdoors in 3 gallon pots, minimum nutes, and no artificial lights. Final dried and jarred tally was 93 grams; not exactly a record yield, even for a first timer. I really have no way to gauge the quality other than subjectively; I would say, in terms of strength, probably a 5-6 on a 10 point scale, but I am finding that the longer the yield remains jarred at 62%, the strength improves.

This year, I am trying five GG-4 autos, again, all outside in only organic soil with perlite.

Pics of 3 GG-4s put into 3 gallon pots on May 26...and 2 gg-4s which sprouted June 11...btw, the seed helmet on one of the 6/11 ladies just came off this morning :)
