So, I introduced myself in the "Introduce Yourself" forum, and I guess the next step to giving back is to start a grow journal. Warning...at first, there may be a little duplication to what I have already posted. By way of background, I have only grown once before, sometime around 1978 if I remember correctly, and even that may not be correct. It was an attempt with some bag seed, and although 40 years ago, I used the wet paper towel method to germinate. The grow took place in my attic with an old florescent light fixture and window light. Plants grew very leggy and tall, and I immediately harvested when I saw white flowers...you can guess the outcome.
Fast forward to June, 2018, and I thought I'd try again. Of course, with the advantage of the internet and great sites such as this, it was just a matter of time before my order of 3 WW autos arrived. Used the paper towel method, but only one seed germinated. Seedsman was nice enough to send replacements which should be here next week.
Seeds arrived June 20, one germinated and was planted on June 23, and now it's been one week. Although I realize that I should have started earlier since I am growing outside, I should still have at least 12 good growing weeks until the end of September, and hope to get the replacement seeds along with five Northern Lights seeds I have ordered in the ground around the second week in July.
As you can see from the pictures, I used a small, clear single drink cup with holes in the bottom as a starter pot. My next starter pots will be much larger cottage cheese containers. I also have black, three gallon pots for the main grow, and will transplant as soon as the root systems develop.
I am using Nature's Care Raised Bed Organic soil which was all I could find locally without added time release fertilizer. I also got some Maine Coast potting soil which I am using on the top to stabilize the stem.
My one plant gets sunlight all day, and I am being mindful of drying, especially because the starter pot is so small. I water around the edge of the starter pot, and today, since the temps are close to 100F, I briefly soaked the bottom 1/3 of the pot in a glass of water to get the soil a little more saturated.
Currently, my plant is hanging with her friends in other plantings pots on my deck, far away from prying eyes.
So that's it so far...
