Overly mature plants

Due to circumstances beyond my control, the plants I was growing outside were not harvested until very recently. A few of the plants were perfect, but other had dead leaves, and many had rotten buds and leaves. I am wondering if the plants with rotted buds are entirely useless, or if I can dispose of any of the rotten buds and leaves and use what is still healthy. Some that had rotten buds have very nice buds further up the plant, and so on.

I am wondering both about its strength and safety-wise.

Remove the rotten parts of the plants & the dead leaves, the rest should be smokable.
