If you are a health care professional on the fence about entering Pennsylvania's medical marijuana program, here's a chance to learn more during a local event offering a primer about the process.

Greenhouse Ventures, an accelerator for medical-focused startups in the cannabis and industrial hemp industries, and Philadelphia's Thomas Jefferson University are hosting a statewide "Medicinal Cannabis Education Tour," with a stop planned beginning 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Crest College's Hamilton Boulevard Building, 2901 Hamilton Blvd. in Allentown.

Kevin Provost, executive director of Greenhouse Ventures, said the event will address what doctors, nurses and pharmacists need to understand about the medicine. Speakers are scheduled to cover such topics as the state law and what health conditions will qualify for treatment with cannabis products.

Provost said in a news release that a common setback for states implementing medical cannabis regulations is the lack of interest from doctors and patients.

"With reputable medical institutions like Thomas Jefferson University providing entry level education ... hopefully health care professionals across the state will realize this is real medicine, that can bring significant medical benefits to thousands of patients," Provost said.

It is expected to take until 2018 before the first patient is able to walk out of a Pennsylvania dispensary with medical marijuana. To date, 29 states have approved the plant's use to treat various conditions, contributing to an industry that, according to published reports, generated $6.7 billion in sales in North America last year and is projected to top $20 billion by 2021.

Though the seminar is designed for medical professional workers, it is also open to the public. Admission is $55. For more information, email info@greenhouse.ventures or visit greenhouse.ventures.
