Anytime you want, really, in the veg stage. I think what you are trying to do is build bud sites, not grow massive fan leaves that shade the entire under-growth. Best to do it when they are strong and vital. Little-by-little you build in veg to get a lot of bud sites, rather than a single cola head. When you go to flower - defoliation is different and more robust.

I love snapping them more! Usually have a good 90 degrees on my colas as of late...I don't mind the need for tape when I can Super resin those buds. Gigi may be a different story as she is supposed to grow really tall but I'm stressing her a little each day...
