I have heard you can use a wide variety of mediums however the perlite verm mix test out the best from what I have read and seen. These 2 are incredibly cheap too! I think algae would be an issue with clay pebbles or lava rock at least until foliage covers it up

Very interesting! I think on my next grow I'll try this out. I'm planning on growing GDP for the next crop and this method looks like something I'd very much like to try.

Just ran across the thread. For the record, I've abandoned verm in my hempy buckets. It was causing rot problems in long running pots. Don't use it... don't notice it's absence.
