PhillyNORML To Lead Marijuana Legalization March On South St

The Global Marijuana March is an annual event in Philadelphia and 300 other cities around the world. Participants bring awareness to the failed policy of cannabis prohibition and call for the full legalization of marijuana.

Over 600 marchers participated in 2009 with PhillyNORML on historic South Street during the peaceful and courteous event that saw no arrests. On YouTube: YouTube - PhillyNORML Global Cannabis March 2009

PhillyNORML's volunteers have been instrumental in recent efforts to reform local marijuana laws.

Pennsylvanians for Medical Marijuana (PA4MMJ) is supporting the PA Compassionate Use Act. State Representative Mark B. Cohen introduced HB1393 in the Pennsylvania Legislature last year. This bill would create legal protections for citizens with serious medical conditions to safely access or grow medical marijuana for therapeutic use.

PhillyNORML has been featured extensively in the local media this year, from the Philadelphia Inquirer to FOX News and the Preston & Steve Show on WMMR. During the month of April news broke of the group's efforts to work with city officials and the District Attorney announced an easing of minor possession penalties.

At the conclusion of the annual marijuana march PhillyNORML, PA4MMJ, NORML-New Jersey and CMMNJ will present brief speeches from local activists at Headhouse Square.

Free information literature will be available from all participating groups throughout the afternoon.

Marijuana is the most widely available, widely used illicit substance in America. The National Home Survey reports that over 100 million Americans have smoked marijuana in their lifetime.

Over 820,000 pot arrests are performed each year in America with almost 30,000 in Pennsylvania. 90% of these arrests are for minor possession.

PhillyNORML advocates for legalizing the regulated, responsible use of marijuana by adults.
