NORTH HILLS - An investigation was under way today following the discovery of a marijuana-growing operation inside a warehouse in North Hills and the seizure of six weapons, police said.

Police found the in-door grow Monday after someone reported smelling something unusual, prompting the response of a Los Angeles Fire Department hazardous materials team.

The haz-mat team and police found more than 200 marijuana plants inside a warehouse unit at 16612 Roscoe Place, near Hayvenhurst Avenue, but no hazardous materials, said Detective Robert Holcomb of the Los Angeles Police Department's Devonshire Station.

The hydroponic growing system had plants growing in water, without soil, under a light and fan system powered through rickety wiring, Holcomb said.

The aroma wafting out through an open window was so strong that the officers who arrived on the scene around 4 p.m. Monday recognized it immediately, Holcomb said.

He said someone was seen running into the warehouse. The man who rents out units came out, and an LAPD team conducted a sweep but failed to find whoever was seen running into the structure, Holcomb said.

Police served a search warrant at the warehouse around 9:30 p.m. Monday and found six weapons -- a pump-action shotgun and five handguns, Holcomb said. He said the marijuana had a street value of about $100,000.

The warehouse is located near homes, police said.
