Vancouver police are currently raiding the Hastings Street headquarters of Cannabis Culture cafe along with other pot shops across the country, while the owners of marijuana dispensary chain – Marc and Jodie Emery – remain in custody in Toronto.

Canada's self-described Prince of Pot and his wife were arrested at Toronto's Pearson airport on Wednesday, according to a lawyer.

The couple was being held for a bail hearing at Old City Hall on Thursday morning, Kirk Tousaw posted on Facebook.

"It appears they were arrested at the airport and not as part of a raid," the lawyer wrote at 1:45 a.m.

Vancouver police began executing a raid at Marc Emery's Cannabis Culture at 307 West Hastings Street at around 8 a.m.

Raids are also being conducted at Cannabis Culture shops in Ottawa and Toronto.

Police in Ottawa raided Cannabis Culture in that city this morning, two weeks after the Bank Street shop opened with a promise to sell marijuana to anyone over 19.

Cannabis Culture shops Toronto and Hamilton are also being visited by police this morning, according to social media posts.

Arguably one of the most well-known marijuana advocates in the country, Marc Emery posted on Facebook on Wednesday around 7 p.m. that the couple were headed to cannabis expo Spannabis in Barcelona.

"Toronto police have enlisted Vancouver police to execute warrants at CCHQ in Vancouver. Also hearing of raids at other Cannabis Culture franchise in ON. Be safe out there folks," Tousaw posted on Facebook.

The Vancouver couple's chain of dispensaries – Cannabis Culture – has at least three stores in Toronto and four locations in Vancouver, selling to anyone aged 19 and over, without membership or medical requirements.

There are about 20 Cannabis Culture shops across the country although Emery has said it's hard to keep count because the stores frequently open and close due to police raids.

Marc Emery is no stranger to the legal system, having been arrested numerous times over the years for pot-related offences and he served more than four years in a U.S. federal prison for selling marijuana seeds across the border from his Vancouver business.

Vancouver marijuana advocate Dana Larsen, a founding member of the Marijuana Party of Canada and former editor of Emery's Cannabis Culture magazine, was just learning about the news when contacted by Postmedia.

It was his understanding that the Emerys were on their way to Spain, to attend a big marijuana expo named Spannabis, when arrested.

"To me it is just another example of what we will be facing for years to come," he said. "Trudeau could fix this by putting in his legislation ... by doing what he said he was going to do."

The federal government is moving to legalize marijuana, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized late last year that the current laws exist.

Police forces across the country have been raiding pot shops and charging owners with trafficking-related offences.

I followed the Marc Emery story when the US was charging him for selling seeds. I even grew a crop with seeds ordered from him. I'm sure he is wondering when they will just leave him be. He has always pushed the limits. Changing the cannabis culture "pun intended" in the world forever.
Best of luck Marc.
