DETROIT -- U.S. customs officials have seized 75 kilograms of marijuana
being smuggled through the train tunnel connecting Windsor and Detroit. The
marijuana seized Friday morning is known to law-enforcement officials and
drug-dealers as B.C. bud -- a high-quality, potent form of marijuana grown
in British Columbia.

The cache has a street value of $825,000 US, said Paul McKinley, assistant
chief patrol agent for the Detroit office of the Customs and Border
Protection.

A Romanian man was detained.

U.S. officials said the variety of marijuana has been showing up more
frequently in Detroit.

"We've definitely seen a surge in it," said David Jacobson, of the Detroit
office of the Drug Enforcement Administration. "It's a huge business."

B.C. bud sells for up to five times as much as ordinary marijuana, U.S. drug
officials said, and is seven times as powerful. The DEA estimates the B.C.
bud trade to be worth about $1 billion annually. "Not too many people can go
out and drop $3,500 to $4,000 a pound," Jacobson said.

The bust Friday was the second time last week agents in Detroit nabbed
smugglers hauling that variety of marijuana through the tunnel.
