You can expect to see a heavy cloud of smoke around the Art Gallery in Downtown Vancouver today for the annual 4/20 protest.

Pot smokers are rallying against the prohibition of marijuana.

VPD Const. Brian Montague says they'll have plenty of officers out – but they aren't looking to crack down with a bunch of arrests.

"Our intention isn't to necessarily act on those that are committing minor offences. We would have to take anything that is brought to our attention, we would have to look at and decide whether or not we should act on the information we have," he explains.

Montague says the rally is typically a peaceful protest and they don't expect any major problems.

"If anyone reads our drug policy, it's quite clear that minor offences involving things like marijuana is something that's not a high priority for us. To put the general public at risk for minor offences is something we wouldn't necessarily do," he adds.

Organizers are expecting over 20,000 people to attend today's protest.

Meantime, 4/20 celebrations in Seattle are expected to be bigger than ever now that marijuana is legal in Washington State.

Quite a few people from the Lower Mainland are choosing to ditch local events and celebrate south of the border, instead.

This is the first weed holiday since Washington State voters chose to legalize pot... The new rules kicked in back in December.

Trey Keystone is one of the people behind the event. "You'll just see a lot more people that feel more comfortable going out, especially now that it's legal and they don't have to hide it."

He says in addition to people from Metro Vancouver... there are going be a lot of marijuana enthusiasts coming in from Idaho and Oregon.

The other US state to legalize pot – Colorado – also has a big party planned.

And guess who's going to be there? Who else? Captain cannabis — Snoop Dogg...AKA Snoop Lion.
