Queensland politicians are talking up the economic potential of industrial hemp after state Parliament passed legislation which will allow the commercial production of cannabis.

The legislation has the support of members on all sides of politics.

Hemp production trials have been underway in Queensland for the last four years, and the new laws will allow for the development of a commercial industry.

Primary Industries Minister Henry Palaszczuk says demand for hemp products overseas is growing, and the export opportunities are significant.

He says the crop may also prove profitable for Queensland farmers.

"Industrial hemp could be a sound replacement crop which will bring renewed vigour to a number of our rural communities and diversification of their economic base," Mr Palaszczuk said.

The Government says the entire process will be strictly monitored to prevent any criminal activity.
