Radogast 2 - Return of the Clones

i still like my plastic pots

One day , I may get some 1/2 gallon to 1 gallon square plastic pots that taper towards the bottom.

Doc bud uses them and they look like they make transplanting a lot easier.
Actually, what they make easier is checking the roots to see if it is time to transplant.
Per reports, root balls slide easily out and back into the pots. :)

I have some BT in powder form. It didn't work well when I was watering from the top as the dust got soggy and caked - plus I coated when I should have dusted. I have an cosmetics dust bulb ready to try with BT dust.

The trauma / failure to grow at the beginning of this journal started when I tried to use mosquito dunks and BT against fungus gnats. Because of that, I haven't wanted to fight the gnats until I know they are sticking around. I haven't had 3 consecutive of gnat problem in months, so I haven't had to do something yet.
..... I guess I'm just gunshy about attacking gnats.

Plus that whole idea about catching mosquitos and harvesting their bits is kinda weird :)

 hahaha!!! Have you tried neem meal yet? It's an excellent additive in its own right, but it also cut my gnat population almost completely out. Actually, I can't recall seeing any in the tent the past couple days. That's exactly what BlueJay said to expect.

The buildasoil CC mix contains neem cake, so I only ordered neem oil for a foliar treatment (if needed)

I finally broke down and purchased some because it's a valuable top dress. My purchase was strongly motivated by my exasperation with the gnats. I was pleasantly surprised at how effective it was in that regards. Strong smelling stuff. It took me a couple weeks to learn to appreciate the neem "perfume", but now I find I actually like it. It mixes surprisingly well with the patchouli bath soap I've been using because it's Dale's favorite. I only know that because the bag of neem meal is still sitting on the living room floor, spreading it's distinctive smell throughout the apartment.

Evidentially soil nerds don't care about such matters as odiferous additives. At least this one doesn't. :laughtwo:

The gnats are out of sight, out of mind. :)

They were crawling all over the soil yesterday, little shiny glimmers, but no fliers.
Today, none to be seen.

I am NOTa fan of patchouli. Walking to the UC Berkeley campus (pre-teen) in the 60s, every friggin store smelled like that awful patchouli incense. Walking into HR Puffin' Stuff on High Street in Oakland, the ONLY head shop I saw before 1980, I winced at the patchouli smell. 2005 hippy revival shops in Cambridge Mass, still don't like the smell.

I have burned a lot of incense in my life, but never more than a 1/2 inch of patchouli.

Big Bertha and Delillah defoliation.

I haven't mentioned it before, but these are not my plants. I provide the seeds (breeder free seeds), light, water, pots, labels, and growing area, but they are being grown by family members. Last night after work, I discovered they were defoliated. The jobs looks a little odd to me, especially the small greenery on Big Bertha, but they look happy. :)

Delilah Defoliated (love the alliteration) - 17" tall.

Denise clone rooting in the SWICK

I decided to tie down White Widow Denise's long, skinny arms. When I pulled her off the wet perlite, she had roots.

This clone of a struggling clone (C2) still has skinny, weak , old looking, branches. I have another C2 clone of a struggling clone, Bellatrix, in late veg. Bellatrix has fresh green, but not thick branches. Bella's fresh green growth is after she was transplanted.

If C2 Bellatrix's trunk fills out, I'll let C2 Denise (above) grow up and enter the flower room.
If C2 Bellatrix doesn't build robust trunks and arms, I'll try to grow one fresh green branch on C2 Denise and clone that.
With so much in veg, it doesn't seem worth it to me to flower out a weak trunked plant.

I'd toss her, but the original White Widow Denise had a brief, slightly hallucinogenic effect - visual, but mostly auditory.
I really want to experience what she can do when she flowers strong and healthy. :)

I like GeoPots better than SmartPots.

GeoPots have seams around the top rim (and maybe the bottom rim.) However they do it, Geo Pots maintain their shape.

SmartPots get slouchy and the dirt settles and moves around. I added about a quart of soil to a crack and tucked near the rim of this 10 gallon pot. It is more compacted now, but more stable.

My smart pots do that too.

Sex is in the air

After my last post, I went down to the basement garden room to look at the C2 clones.

C2 Denise has, in the last 2 hours turned her tips up towards the light. When I did a close-up to show the branches turning up, I saw pre-flowers !!!

C2 Bellatrix (late veg) and AK47 Gabby (late veg) also have pre-flowers.

Two 6" mystery seedlings planted Nov. 1st (part of the failure to thrive generation) also have pre-flowers. Say what???

Half as a joke, I checked the clones and found a clone taken 5/20 forming popcorn buds.

I am in the habit of cloning everything shortly before they go into 12/12. Giselle went in 12/12 on 5/12 but her clone looked like it wouldn't make it.
On 5/20, when Giselle had been in the room for 8 days, with pre-flowers, but not yet flowering, I took another Giselle clone.
It is this 5/20 C1 clone of Giselle in the flowering room, a clone that had no visible roots, that is flowering.

Did this flowering clone encourage pre-flowers on the vegging plants?

My first thought on the photo thumbnail was an Orangutan with Blue arms hanging from a skinny plant

But you are so right! They do look like half-Windsor :)

- -

Imagination aside, they are half-hitches: the simplest single rope knot I know.

Only a secure knot under tension. Collapsible like a slip knot. A single wrap plus a tuck. Enough to do the job.

The first knot I tied was a bowline, then a slipknot, but they were both more knot than I needed.

I never considered the half-windsor, but it's visually appealing :)

New clones

The family members who are growing Big Bertha and Delilah brought home some Snowcap and Girl Scout Cookies clones.
They are clean, partially rooted OUTDOOR clones. I'm not aware of spider mites being an outdoor problem so all should be good.

I was a little peaved at the new clones arriving unexpectedly, even though I am happy to have to have the genetics.
I think it's because I went from:
"I wonder if I have too many plants started?" and "Have I created a baby boom bubble with my clones?"
- to -
"I have no idea where I am going to put all these plants. Hard choices will have to be made."
