HONOLULU – The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii and advocates for reforming drug laws are holding a rally and panel discussion to mark the 40th anniversary of the war on drugs.

The ACLU and Hawaii Drug Policy Forum plan to wave signs and demonstrate at the Hawaii Capitol on Friday.

The rally will be followed by a discussion at the Blaisdell Center on Saturday about the effects of the drug war.

Speakers intend to talk about reducing federal penalties for marijuana possession, barriers to cannabis research in Hawaii and experiences of Hawaii medical marijuana patients.

The ACLU of Hawaii Foundation said the events coincide with the anniversary of President Richard Nixon's declaration of a war on drugs.
