Redondo Beach Tightens Medical Marijuana Policy

Redondo Beach is joining a list of South Bay cities that no longer allow delivery or cultivation of medical marijuana.

"This is one case where we have the ability to set our rules in Redondo Beach," Community Development Director Aaron Jones said.

Cultivation of medical marijuana means anything from growing it yourself to allowing a warehouse to grow marijuana. While the planning commission staff recommended potentially allowing the delivery of medical marijuana, the council ultimately voted against it. Jones said potential abuses of allowing delivery outweigh other benefits.

"The abuse there is very clear that basically anybody would be able to transport (marijuana) and that's certainly not a good situation from an enforcement and community standpoint," Jones said.

The vote to ban the cultivation and delivery of medical marijuana in city limits was unanimous.

Cities have recently begun implementing these ordinances that allow for more local control over medical marijuana regulations. Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hawthorne, Torrance and Gardena do not allow commercial cannabis activities in city limits.

Another good reason to make it legal recreationally with grow rights this November. Prop 215 was too vague and open for this kind of abuse from local authorities.
