AUSTRALIA- Sniffer dogs will be used in South Australian nightclubs to detect drug users and dealers after a Bill passed the Upper House last night.

The Government Bill, which will be effectively rubber stamped when it is debated in the Lower House, will allow police to use the dogs in targeted raids around the state.

Police Minister Paul Holloway said the laws would be an "increasingly important" tool used to make entertainment venues safer.

"Currently some ambiguity exists as to the extent to which police can carry out people-screening operations using drug detection dogs," he said.

"These amendments will clarify this matter and ensure that there is a sound legal basis for using the dogs for drug detection purposes.

"The new laws will target dealers and users of such drugs as heroin, amphetamines, cannabis and cocaine. These drugs can kill a user and some can cause explosions of lethal violence."
