Santa Maria Creates New Ordinance For Marijuana Dispensaries

The City of Santa Maria is attempting to firmly shut the door when it comes to medical marijuana dispensaries.

On Thursday, the City Attorney's Office presented a new ordinance to the Planning Commission.

The ordinance would clarify the ban on pot operations in the city.

The city says pot shops are already banned, but a recent California Supreme Court decision found that while states can legalize medical marijuana dispensaries, cities also have a right to ban them.

"This law, if approved by the Planning Commission and City Council would specifically ban medical marijuana dispensaries in all zones in the City of Santa Maria," said Wendy Stockton, Santa Maria Senior Deputy City Attorney.

If approved by the Planning Commission, it will go before the City Council for final approval sometime in September.
