Scrog Potential

As soon as I decide the optimum strategy and setup I will be starting my endevour. After hours and hours of research I have concluded that:

1-Too little light in a large space is bad
2-Too little light for too many plants is bad
3-The more light dispersed to as much of the plant as possible is good
4-HPS/MH only way to go
5-Scrog grows always seem to use little space thus needing less light but always produce sick buds.

Lets talk about lesson number 5 a little further. In almost every journal I've read that did not scrog they have a large space full of a few good colas with smaller branches yielding a few smaller buds. In every scrog journal I've read the space is smaller, thus utilizing light much more effectively and all the buds are trophy colas. My question is why wouldn't everybody that doesn't have a huge bankroll and warehouses to grow in use the scrog method?

If you put 6 plants in a 4'x3' space giving them each 2 square feet to scrog in that has to yield much more than 6 plants in the same space left to grow wildly. Rule of thumb is the more watts per square foot the better with 50 watts per sq. foot the optimum...using a 600 W lamp on this surface comes out to exactly 50 wpsf. Letting the branches grow substantially pre flowering is possible with 2 sq ft each plant and they will receive plenty of light while growing further. 6 plants in this same space will never receive the same light coverage as that of a scrog. A 5' x 4' under a 1,000 watt light would be equal to 50 as well allowing 10 plants in that space. What a great test that would be: 10 plants in a 5 x 4 scrog and 10 plants in a 5 x 4 room. I got a feeling who the winner would be...

In small spaces SCROG rules.

But I haven't seen the trophy colas with my setup. Before SCROG I got one or two really nice large colas. With my SCROG setup, I haven't had a cola larger than 8 or 9 grams. But I harvest about twice as much with SCROG than with out.

I also think if I had unlimited space, then SCROG becomes a pain. The more plants, the more work in getting the plants all lined up and training them where to grow. In small grow area's SCROG can also be a pain in being able to get to all side of the screen to work with it.

A lot of growers use LST (low stress training) which is basically doing the same thing as us scrog-ers.

I fell in love with scrogs after reading VerdantGreens grows..hes on a diff site but can easily find his journals via google. With a small space it seems to only make sense to me to utilize it the best as possible.

Prairie touched a bit on the pain it is during the 'training' time for scrog grows. I only have 4 plants going, each with their own screen, and I absolutely dreaded pulling those branches back under..especially during the last week or so of training. It was tough/touchy work.

All in all scrogs kick serious ass. After the training is done, the work is done. They just grow above the screen and fill in nicely. Definitely takes some work learning how to fill the screen adequately. On my first attempt I really only fully utilized 1 scrog of the 4..the others could have been done better.

Best of luck, feel free to ask anything else..I'll try and check up on this thread.

Edit: also check out Modular Scrogs before deciding..they give you some additional flexibility at the cost of labor.

couldnt find anything on verdantgreen grows...

what is the maximum space a plant can be scrogged out to? 3' x 3' with 2 inch holes? i was thinking about doing a 9 x 6 with 6 plants under one 600w. each plant would have its own screen but could allow for stretching into the others. since there is a limit on number of plants that can be grown i need to yield as much as possible per plant. proper materials isnt the problem, i just want to get it all right to optimize yield.

Yo,

Type in Verdantgreen Scrog in google, should be the first link..hes at ----- (can I mention other sites names? If not delete pls mod).

I've seen some huge Scrogs man. I think a plant will fill just about any size screen given enough veg time.

For some reference, my screens are about 11x12.5". Now I only have a 2x2 space so I wanted to maximize as much as possible while having the option of growing multiple strains.

Edit: guess I can't, lol auto blocked out..thats cool, should be able to find him with minimal searching..not a whole lot of Mod. Scroggers out there.

Hey prairie...do you think it could be your lighting as to why the size of your buds aren't bigger or are they the size they should be given the method??

You certainly have the lumen output at about 35,000. Your grow looks awesome...

I thought I would just lst but scrog might be better??

How much screen depends on how much you want to veg them out. Given enough time, I would think you could fill a 6x6 foot screen with one to two plants.

I only veg for two tho three weeks, then into the flower closet and SCROG. The first two to three weeks the plants stretch a lot.

The size of the buds depend on a lot of variables. The light source is a big one. Last harvest I got some bigger buds, but not that much bigger. So just paying more attention to it means a lot. The size isn't what I'm looking for though. Total harvest, and quality is more important to me.

Last harvest was almost the same amount with two plants versus four plants in the same of everything else.

Yeah...I'm into quality and quantity as well..bud size isn't that important to me either...after all...it's just porn!! lol

I lst my first grow and then turned to SCROG and never turned back. They are a pain to train the branches but once done the work is mostly done (I can only work from one side). I grow for quality and then quanity. I doubled the cola count when I started to SCROG, smaller cola but easier to dry.

goin 12 plants, 2-1,000 watt hps. deep water culture. starting in about 3 weeks. ill be doing a journal as well, lookin forward to it. will for sure be a scrog--i know training 12 will be a mess, but it'll all be worth it. see ya'll at the journal
