The Minnesota Senate passed a bill Wednesday that would legalize the use of medical marijuana.

The Minnesota Senate today passed legislation which would provide for the legal use of medical marijuana.

"This bill decriminalizes the actions of the seriously ill and their families, who are only trying to alleviate their debilitating pain," said Senator Steve Murphy, DFL-Red Wing. "We heard countless hours of testimony in many committees from patients who have experienced pain relief from medical marijuana, but feared breaking the law."

Medical marijuana has already been legalized in 13 other states.

This bill allows patients to use medical marijuana for symptoms related to a debilitating medical condition, such as cancer, glaucoma, AIDS or other conditions.

Those using or supplying medical marijuana must be registered with the Minnesota Department of Health and have a registry card before using or supplying medical marijuana.

Those who misuse their registration card face felony prosecution which is a stricter penalty than the misdemeanor offense for illegal possession of the drug.
