Yup, you need to let those white pistils shrivel up and change color. You should also get a loop or digital microscope to check trichomes to see if they changed from clear to milky or amber.

Nice plant she looks like fire! Agree with Vegan you will need a jewelers loupe or mini microscope, if you can’t see the color of your trichs - then we can’t help. You need to be able to see clearly if the trichome heads are clear, cloudy or amber. There is no possible way for us to tell based on a regular photo, you’ve got to have ample magnification. A 30/60 X mini microscope is about $15 at grow shops or online and for about $35 you can get a digital mini microscope that hooks to usb and you can share pics. The scope will help with pest control too, mites are tiny and their eggs are even smaller, no way to see them without a scope. Below is pictured a cheapie $15 job.

While I certainly agree a microscope or loupe would help, I am not sure I’d go as far to say that they are absolutely necessary.

They can certainly help the grower precisely pinpoint the ideal point to harvest — no doubt about that, which is why I got the digital microscope.

However, people have been eyeballing this stuff for a long time. If you’ve got big fat swollen calyxes and all the pistils are withered up, chances are your trichomes are well into the amber phase.

I agree with what you’ve said on judging ripeness based on other factors but between looking at trichs, identifying pests or searching for mite eggs I find it irreplaceable. I’m still old school with the analog pocket version but one day will upgrade to the digital version.

Of course I used to be able to read the serial number on a grasshoppers ass at 40 paces...
