More than 25 pounds of marijuana that was netted in a weekend drug bust in Bozeman may have been bound for a medical marijuana dispensary, the Gallatin County Sheriff's Department said in a news release Friday.
The marijuana and ¼ pound of hashish, a purified resin made for the marijuana plant, may have been intended to be sold at the dispensary as legal medical marijuana, the sheriff's department said. At standard medical prices, the marijuana had a value of over $160,000, according to the sheriff's department.
The bust happened on Saturday, Jan. 22 when Missouri River Drug Task Force detectives and law enforcement officers from assisting agencies, conducted surveillance and saw a drug transaction take place, according to authorities.
Todd Merrell, 45, and Judy Harms, 40, both of N. San Juan, California, were observed taking part in the transaction along Timberline Drive in Bozeman on Saturday by members of the Missouri River Drug Task Force and local law enforcement officers from assisting agencies, according to an affidavit of probable cause. During the alleged transaction, law enforcement intervened and took them into custody.
Authorities searched their vehicle and found 24 bags of marijuana with many of the bags weighing about 500 grams per bag for a total weight of 25.81 pounds, according to court documents. They also reportedly found a bowl containing about 5.8 ounces of hashish. Receipts and other items indicating that the defendants had just arrived from California were also found, police said.
Merrell was charged with two counts of distribution of dangerous drugs and one count of possession of dangerous drugs with intent to distribute. Harms was charged with two counts of possession of dangerous drugs with intent to distribute and one count of criminal distribution of dangerous drugs.
They are being held at the Gallatin County Detention Center with bond set at $30,000 each.
