Solo Cup: 2 Different, Unknown Strains

Groundtop

Well-Known Member
I have two plants here that I'm attempting to grow from veg to harvest in solo cups.

Unknown strains, but obviously different types. One looks to be an indica dominant, while the other sativa.

I don't even know the sexes yet.

Should I top now? Let it grow normal?

Come along for the ride. Opinions, criticism, and advice is welcomed!

From what I can see they both look like females and yes I would top immediately they are perfect size. But from my experience just top one time for the best outcome.
How can you tell they are females?

Thanks for the advice! I'll give them a snip today!

Their first hair cuts.

The solo cup plants I did were grown in 12/12 lighting from seed. This keeps the size down. They still need to be about a month old to get mature enough to flower, but with 12 hours light per day they don’t get too large, which is important in a cup.

Should I do any type of trimming of bottom fan leaves?

I've seen people low stress training the main chutes for light penetration as well.

Suggestions?

Removing leaves is not something I do a lot of, personally. I find the plants are able to manage their foliage just fine. The shaded ones are naturally phased out. In the meantime they are working - photosynthesizing to feed the rest of the plant, as well as being used to draw nutrients from before they die off. But some people do cut leaves off.

If you train and spread the plant out then more branches tend to form- if that’s what you want.

I seen one guy comments saying they are too young to tell if they are male or female. What I look for is where the nodes are (the new growth) there are usually 2 little hair looking things poking out and that's how you know if it's a female.
Now if it's a male you will see what looks like a little ball growing out of the nodes but like that guy said they may be too young to completely tell for example maybe the balls haven't grown in yet but from my experience seeing those little hairs and not having any little balls means female. Basically just let them grow a little longer and you'll be able to tell for sure

Also thought I would ask.. you don't plan on keeping them in the Solo cups the whole time do you? You can only keep them in there so long until they become root bound and then they will start to get droopy, not want to grow and possibly die. When they become rootbound they start to look as if you've underwater them. So yeah just something for you to look for when that point comes.

Hey all! Thanks for the info!

They will be grown completely in solo cups. Tomorrow morning at 6am I will initiate the flip and begin their flower.

I'll be feeding pretty heavy with some maxibloom from GenHydro.

I've noticed that on both plants. We will see for sure in a few weeks. Tomorrow I'll flip.

Maybe you can input your feeding advice?

Soil gets dry fast. Usually every two days it is ready for water. I was thinking about feeding twice a week and the rest just pH'd water.
I’m not much of a soil grower. What type of soil are you in? If you check that other thread and then there’s a link on it somewhere I think... that I posted to yet another solo cup thread, you can get a lot of information seeing what people did. I was mostly in coco, and fed with each watering - 2 or 3 times a day. Soil doesn’t drain as well and I don’t usually see people feeding so often in soil- but I don’t see why you couldn’t as long as you didn’t overdo it.

If you feed more often then feed lighter in proportion. So... for my coco plants I was feeding at about what you would typically call half strength or less.
