"the road that leads to satori"

Thanks for stopping by to check out my new journal.
As my handle suggests, many of my growing challenges involve heat. So much so that winter is considered our outdoor gardening season.
While everyone else is snowed in we harvest tomatoes and pineapples from the yard.
This has brought a big challenge to growing cold weather indicas without lots of mechanical intervention (lots of fans and AC happening).
Long story short, while researching heat tolerant strains that don't grow 20' tall and bloom for half a year I came across Mandala seeds who claim to test all of their genetics up to 110 deg (f) and knew right away I wanted to try their "Satori" cultivar. It seemed like a good fit, productive upbeat and clearheaded high, heat tolerant plant, and decent yield. SOLD!

After months of scouring the interwebs for someone that had some in stock, shipped to my location, didn't require some sort of shady payment arrangement, etc. I was able to score a pack out of Austria and was eager to get started....as soon as there was room in the rotation and finish up some indicas before summer temps rose.

I am sliding these into my compact perpetual garden, so there's other strains going on in the background but I'm attempting to feature just this strain since there are limited journals out there. Yeah, she's growing next to northern lights, GDP, industrial plant, mango, and afghan but there are plenty of places to see those strains!

Since space is limited and the genetics were tough to come by, I'll be popping two of my ten seeds labeled "S1" and "S2" and hope one is a female.

I've been procrastinating starting this journal but have managed to take progress pics over time and honestly how exciting are tiny seedlings?
Everyone REALLY wants to see the flowers, right?

Next, seedlings...

Then some serrated fan leaves...

Ready to transplant...

building up some leaves and roots in their new pots....

Getting tall!

I skipped a week or so, but it was time to take some cuttings for sexing...

After only a week, S1 was already popping roots in her cup of water....
Her sister in the background is still working on it but I'm starting to see some bumps forming on the base of her stem,
so should have some roots any day now!

spidermites spotted in garden!
Not to worry, knocked them out with a concoction of neem oil, dish soap, and cayenne pepper mixed up in a bottle of warm water!
Now to keep an eye on them and keep spraying a few times a week...whew!

Checking on the girls tonight (in the foreground)
It's been a hot week and everyone was thirsty.

Today one of the clones was ready to transplant, the other still needs a few days...
Meanwhile parent plants S1 and S2 are ready to begin their LST regimen

Checking in on the satori i discovered a major boo boo!
I got distracted the other day and forgot to check the water level in my clone cup and found the clone for S2 mostly wilted!
Nooo!
So i topped it off and misted the top of the clone so now we wait to see if it pulls through. Worst case a slight delay in sexing the donor plants.
Meanwhile clone 1 is doing well and the parent plants are slowly growing into their LST. Not the fastest grower so far but there is a lot of heat stress and honestly it's okay for them to take their time as the plants ahead of them in the rotation need to finish up first.

I have a cutting from a defoliation that I have just stuck into the hydroton of a different DWC veg rez I also have on the go.
Not pulled it out yet, but I it is looking healthy after a few days....

Sad to say I've been battling pests and high temps all summer and these two ladies have put up a long, losing battle. They're not totally gone yet but they are in really bad shape. It almost seems like something is up with the roots now as the leaves are shriveling and dropping and the soil stays wet...if they don't pull through soon it'll be over. Dealing with the same problem on a few of my industrial and mango plants too. Maybe a soil pest or something. At least ive got some other varieties doing okay despite battling spider mites and white flies on the canopy and what appears to be spring tails in the coco.
These are some tough sumbitches!
Spray them with neem oil and they seem to bathe in it and keep crawling. When i water the plants springtails come up out of the soil by the hundreds and i blast them with diatomaceous earth and they walk on through it like nothing happened. Aaagh!
I'm trying really hard to not fight dirty but it gets really tempting to reach for a can of bad stuff and end them all.
