An Oregon Medical Marijuana Grower is the first to be convicted following federal raids on grow operations in Southern Oregon.
Thirty-six-year-old Jason Michael Scott Nelson, pictured above was the first to be convicted for shipping marijuana from Portland to Boston using a pod full of furniture as a disguise. The drugs were grown using medical marijuana cards which are legal in the state of Oregon. Craig Ransom is a former business partner and owner of Spin Cycle in Grants Pass where Nelson was just one payment away from owning the bike shop before he got arrested. Ransom says he's talked with the Nelson about the consequences adding that the man grew and sold marijuana for money, trying to get a leg up on life. Instead he became the first medical marijuana card holder in Oregon to be convicted federally for growing over 100 plants and conspiracy to sell. On Friday, a U.S. District Court convicted Nelson of conspiracy to grow and sell more than one hundred marijuana plants, possession of unregistered machine guns and other weapons. The courts are also trying to have Nelsons rural Josephine County home forfeited as part of an illegal drug operation. One man who worked with Nelson testified against him in federal court. He plead guilty to federal conspiracy charges. Right now, Nelson is being held pending sentencing on August 13th. He could face forty years and five million dollar fine. Three others allegedly involved in this interstate drug trafficking scheme are facing state charges.
