Spalding’s Outdoor AutoFlower Soil Grow In Florida

What’s up guys! I’m Spalding and I am about 4-5 days into my first legitimate grow. I hope y’all will follow along with me and please chime in with any thoughts, advice, or criticism, I welcome it all.

A few tidbits about my grow: northeast Florida springtime weather means nighttime temps anywhere from 65-75F and daytime temps anywhere from 75-90F. The water I will be using is Zephyrhills all natural spring water that has a Ph of 6.3-6.5 right out of the jug(I’ve tested 7 different jugs and all Ph was consistent) and, PPM is basically zilch. I will be growing outdoors in white 5 gallon buckets with a 50/50 split of Ocean Forest and Happy Frog soil with a small bag of perlite mixed in. Seeds purchased from Seedsman(great experience btw) and I’m growing Amnesia Haze, Jack Herer, Northern Lights, and Sour Diesel.

Wednesday April 3rd I placed each seed in a small cup of my spring water. Left them in about 20hrs then removed and placed each seed in wet paper towel inside ziploc. Checked after 24hrs and not much happened, checked after 48hrs and 3 of the 4 had 1” taproots and the 4th(Jack Herer) was about 1/2”. I decided they looked good enough to plant so I did :)

I had to go out of town this weekend so on Friday(5th) I rolled the dice and went ahead and planted them and left them inside with lights off and A/C on 74degrees. To my delightful surprise, I came home 48hrs later to 3 of them already sprouted out of the soil and the Jack Herer just about to bust through the soil.

I do have a couple questions: we are having great spring weather with some hotter than usual days in the mid to upper 80s, how soon should I get the seedlings in direct/filtered sun and how much sun? Also, what am I looking at as far as watering in the early stages? Should I just feel the soil or is it best just to give them some regular water every couple days while they’re so young?

I am super stoked about this grow and will try to update with status and photos as much as I can. Thanks for reading guys, happy growing :)

First day of being outdoors for the girls :) I kept them on the screened porch for filtered sun just to get them acclimated the first few days. Plus, our forecast this week has a lot of random thunderstorms and I don’t want them to get caught in one while I’m at work.

Question about watering seedlings, they haven’t had water since the initial planting on Friday night April 5th. Should I let the soil completely dry out or keep it moist while they are seedlings? TIA

Here they are 3 days old from left to right:
Amnesia Haze
Jack Herer
Northern Lights(seed still on)
Sour Diesel(seed still on)

2nd day being outdoors, they spent about an hour and a half in direct sunlight then I came home to bring them in for a severe storm. In just that hour or so in sunlight the Northern Lights and Sour Diesel shedded their seeds and now have 4 leaves like the other 2. They seem to be doing well so far.

5th day in the soil for these girls and all seems good in the hood. There was an idea floating in my mind about some extra grow time at night...so today at work I made a game plan in my head and surprisingly seems to be working out as planned. Yes, I rigged a $34 light setup, but it should help them theoretically right? I’m not sure how high the lights are supposed to be but here is where I’m at right now:

-(4) 75watt “daylight” LEDs
-hanging 26” above the plants

With these bulbs’ brightness and spectrum, and distance they are above the girls, will they be ok for 6hrs or so a night? Should I change the height? Any recommendations would be great. Thanks fellow growers :)

Day 6 in the soil for the girls and more green growth! Gave each plant some water today by soaking a paper towel and wringing it out around the seedling, twice for each girl. I waited until the top of the soil looked almost completely dry before I gave them their first actual watering since transplant. Hopefully my watering will be correct, as that’s what I’m most new to, actually waiting until the soil is dry, because it’s a weed :)

Any comments?

1 full week since these girls were put in soil...I have no experience but it seems like a good first week of growth and I’m pleased how it’s going so far.

I’ve made a small lighting change from (4) 75w LED bulbs to (4) 100w LED bulbs; an increase of 400 lumens per bulb for a total of 6000 lumens. They are still hanging roughly 25” or so above the girls. I’ve been bringing the buckets on the screened porch to my light setup around 7pm and they get that extra grow time with the LEDs until somewhere around 1-4am depending on when my wife wakes up and says “turn them off” LOL(lights are right outside our bedroom). So, they’re getting roughly 6hrs or so of direct sunlight and anywhere from 6-9 hrs of LED light. At a minimum the girls will see 12 hours of good direct light and on some days when work permits I can move them to achieve up to 9hrs of direct sunlight plus LED time. Regardless, they are being well cared for and hopefully I can keep it up with no stupid mistakes and they’ll reward me in the end:)

Here are some pics of the girls at 7 days old tonight(what looks like where I watered them uneven is just my phone shadow)

10 days in the soil for the girls...seeing decent growth I think. They got some great sun today and will tomorrow as well, so I think they’re in a pretty good mood :)

I made a light change today and added some floodlights to direct light straight down on each plant. I finagled the cords and some wire to get them to hang how I wanted. I’ll keep tabs on them every hour or so the first couple nights with these lights to make sure they aren’t burning.

As far as watering goes...other than the initial soil being wet when I planted the seeds, I have only watered them one time. However, I’ve misted the soil around the plants about every other day just making sure they don’t dry up, but that’s hardly any water at all. I think I will water them tomorrow, and the next watering will be just after 2 completes weeks in the soil so maybe I’ll add 1/4 strength nutes and see how they react.

Hope y’all had a good weekend, I’m loving spending so much time with my girls! Here are the most recent pics with my new lighting setup. Cheers

Hello 420 world and Happy Easter. Hope y’all had a wonderful blessed day!

My girls are now 16 days old and growth has really been promising I feel. I’m sure there are bigger plants at 16 days old but I feel good about where mine are at and they seem to be healthy. If anyone sees anything that I wouldn’t see please let me know, if not then I hope they will continue to keep flourishing in their 7-8hrs of direct sun and 8-10hrs of my redneck LEDs floodlights at night :)

I think I will start to introduce a nute or two at the end of this week or perhaps next, but I’m starting to kick that idea around.

I’m also kicking around the idea of LST, and if it’s too early to start and when I should? Any suggestions? Thanks for stopping by and having a look and I hope everyone has a great week ahead!

P.S. This week I’m going to get some label stakes so I can show the names of the plant in each picture.

Well, my girls are 22 days old since they broke through the soil and I think they are doing pretty good. This past week has seen some fairly intense growth with Sour Diesel definitely being the front runner but Amnesia Haze not too far behind. Northern Lights is definitely the smallest and least mature, and the Jack Herer comes in 3rd.

It’s amazing to me how little water they require. I’m still waiting to do my first feeding, which will happen in about an hour :) but mind boggling to me how little water I’ve given them. The growth they put on is so fun to watch.

So as you will see in the pics, I have started LST, and probably about a 5+ days late but curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to try it. I’m sure I will probably regret it as I feel like I have no clue what I’m doing, but after numerous hours of research, I had to try it.

AND, please correct me if I’m wrong but it looks like the Amnesia Haze is already starting to flower? I was hoping to get some more vegging done but I guess I have no control over that :)

I am happy regardless, just bending over and giving a good sniff to each plant puts the biggest smile on my face! It’s so cool to have finally participated in the history of growing cannabis, and I really enjoy it. I love the new knowledge I’m gaining and I hope to be able to harvest some decent bud in a couple months.

PLEASE please feel free to comment if you see anything I can improve or change. I’m happy to hear any and all comments. Thanks everybody

WELL.....happy happy day! This MarsHydro Pro II CREE 128 LED setup is wicked cool! From unboxing to the functions, it seems to ooze of quality. My girls are getting a night session with some actual legit lights to feed off of. Took me awhile to figure out exactly how I wanted to suspend the light as I’m growing on my screened porch. I ended up screwing (2) 5/16 4” eye bolts and stringing some paracord from those anchor points. I also am using a rope ratchet to raise and lower the unit.

From reading, it seems like I need to be anywhere from 12”-18” above the canopys while my girls are flowering, albeit the early stages. I am starting at 12” and am
monitoring every hour to see if I notice any light burn. I am using both function of the MarsHydro - grow and bloom switches for full spectrum.

The LST I started over the weekend seems to doing ok as far as new bud sites, but I definitely noticed the tips of a few of my fan leaves burn almost immediately after I started the LST...I’m sure why. Luckily the burnt tips were bottom fan leaves and ended up being upside down so I just cut trimmed them off(only 3 small branches total). I can however totally notice new bud sites forming due to the apical cola not being higher than the rest of the plant.

I am really enjoying this grow! And am SO stoked about my new light setup. Weather this week looks sporadic with some definite thunderstorms Thursday and Friday looks that way as well, so these girls should get PLENTY of my new MarsHydro light :)

Any and all comments welcomed, I feel like I’m the only one in here

Soil container should have holes for drainage. They like to be watered like once per week. They like to get a chance to dry out between being watered.

With auto's you should just let them grow normal without any type of training or listing. They don't have time to recover as they will only be alive for about 3 months.

Grassmaster, thanks. I have holes drilled into my buckets and I’ve been doing a good job at not over watering them, as hard as it is haha. It is mind boggling how little water they need to grow, just fascinating :)

As far as the LST goes, I started it a few days ago and the only thing I noticed was a few leaf tips started to burn. I did a whole heap of research and it seemed like guys were getting really nice results with a little LST. But believe me, I was sooo skeptical to try it, especially being my first grow, but I’m glad I did, I’m really enjoying watching all the new bud spots pop up.

I trimmed my first few fan leaves today, it was difficult but a few just had to go. Thanks for stopping by Grassmaster! Cheers

It's still drying so I'm not sure yet. I dry them for 2 weeks then jar them. So mine might be lighter. Probably 3 ounces of bud material and sugar leaves.

It's not very tall. That's why you don't have to list them. The light will go all the way through the plant.

Well my girls are 32 days old today and we are having a great time together :)

I have now had my Mars Hydro 128 Cree LED for 8 days and wow the growth these girls have put on in a week, I swear they’ve doubled in size or more. I’ve kept them pretty extensively LST’d and other than trimming multiple fan leaves, I really enjoy the LST. I can see amazing new bud spots on all my girls, but my favorite part is how you can keep them less than a foot tall for so long. They have a very nice amount of lateral growth and I assume that’s directly related to the LST so that is really cool to watch and benefit from. I can only hope the girls al harvest yields decent bud, but one thing is for certain; I will have more bud than I would had I not done LST.

The Sour Diesel(still pre-flower maybe?) is then most impressive result of my bunch from the LST. It was the front runner when I started but not by much. However, now it has just explained with new bud spots and I love how it’s growing.

The Amnesia Haze has been in flower the longest and is starting to pack on some thick buds, but I’m still just a full month into this grow.

Northern Lights and Jack Herer are starting their own growth spurt as I think they are still in pre-flower. This is an area I’m still unsure about.

I know I’m supposed to look for white pistils, but does that strictly mean they are in the flowering stage or is that the start of pre-flower. And how long is the transition from pre-flower to full on?

Here are a few recent pics, with the last one being the most current taken just now in the 80 degree Florida sunshine :)
