The district of Squamish has followed Vancouver's lead, and has voted to regulate marijuana dispensaries.

But while the district began accepting marijuana business license applications Wednesday, the move was not unanimously accepted.

Douglas Race was the only Councillor in Squamish to vote against the move to municipal regulation.

"The time for this is when Federal Government legalizes it and it's not trafficking, which is a serious criminal offence. And then we can go ahead and regulate it in a proper way."

Race says there's nothing progressive about making the 'wrong decision.'

"Our existing zoning bylaws would've allowed us to stop one of those dispensaries have we chosen to do so. So we don't need to amend our bylaws to somehow allow them, that's just nonsensical."

He says he's not against marijuana legalization but thinks the vote is premature.
