Study: Marijuana May Potentially Help Cancer Patients

Researchers believe medical cannabis could possibly help treat cancer as well as a number of related symptoms.

In a study published on Thursday in the journal JAMA Oncology, experts from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and Alpert Medical School of Brown University observed several potential benefits for cancer patients who use medical marijuana.

"Marijuana in oncology may have potential for use as an antiemetic, for refractory cancer pain, and as an anti-tumor agent," researchers wrote.

Alongside fighting tumors, researchers found marijuana to be effective against feelings of nausea, pain, and other symptoms related to cancer and chemotherapy-induced illness.

An examination of 36 cancer patients found that use of THC relieved pain similar to codeine, only without side-effects such as respiratory problems.

"Cannabinoids have a favorable safety profile when compared with other analgesic medications," researchers wrote. "In the aforementioned studies, THC was seen to be more sedating than codeine but unlike opioids was not associated with respiratory depression."

The study also noted marijuana's benefits when combined with chemotherapy treatment:

"Cannabis is known for its antiemetic properties, which makes it an appealing treatment for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). It has been proposed that THC may treat nausea via emetic reflex pathways by acting at receptors located in the nucleus tractus solitarii at the level of the area postrema. It has also been shown that THC reverses the effects of 5-HT3 receptor agonists, which normally induce vomiting."

The best results, however, confirmed marijuana's role in shrinking tumors:

"There is evidence that suggests that cannabis may be used as a potential chemotherapeutic treatment. Endocannabinoid signaling is increased in some human tissue malignant neoplasms when compared with noncancerous tissue, especially in highly invasive cancers, suggesting that endocannabinoids may play a role in tumor growth."

Despite the number of positive results taken away from the study, experts believe that even more studies should be conducted on marijuana's relation to cancer.

"More research is needed in all areas related to the therapeutic use of marijuana in oncology," the researchers concluded.
