Subbing in

I read this phrase a lot. Is subscribing the same as just watching a thread or is it following that member? I was hoping to figure it out on my own but doesn't look like it's gonna happen!

I think it just means watching a thread which automagically happens when you make a reply to the thread. As a way to let the author know people are watching, they post “subbing up” or whatever. Before the site update “watching” was called “subscribing” so it made more sense.
