Florence police officials say a substance found on food that was delivered to a church has been identified as marijuana.

Detective Sgt. Rolando Bogran said he received written confirmation Monday morning from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. He said the food was delivered Nov. 21.

"We don't know when the material was placed on the food," Bogran said. "We don't know if it was put on the food at the restaurant, by the delivery person or by someone where it was delivered to. The only thing that we're sure of is that the marijuana was in the food."

Bogran said authorities are trying to determined why someone would put marijuana in the food.

"We don't know if this was retaliation of some kind against an individual or someone trying to ruin the reputation of the restaurant," he said.

Reports indicate there were 18 to 20 people in the group that received the food. Of those, Bogran said about 11 ate some of the food.

"Someone there became suspicious of the food after seeing it, smelling it," Bogran said. "We were called in to investigate."

He said about six of the people who ate the food went to the hospital to be tested; all tested negative for marijuana and none got sick from eating the food.

"We have interviewed the employees at the restaurant, the person who delivered the food and the people at the church," Bogran said.

He said anyone knowing anything about the incident is asked to call Florence police at 768-2729 or CrimeStoppers at 386-8685.
