Hi guys! After having spent a little over a year reading off internet forums and trying to grow smoke-worthy fruit I thought it was time to start sharing how things are going in my garden. Here in the Netherlands the online community isn't too big and as I've mainly been following anglophone grow journals and threads i thought it was more appropriate to share this journal with you guys!

FOR SHORT READ SKIP THE INTRO.

INTRO :

I know the coffeeshop weed isn't at the same level as those silver-coated medical nuggets I've only had the chance to glare at pictures of, but when you know the good placed to buy you can find good quality bud that matches the taste and potency of the strain it comes from. This is to say I will be comparing results with coffeeshop ganja but this might not always be accurate as for example at every shop where you buy amnesia (probably one of the most standard strains here, usually grown commercially from clone in holland) it can taste different and be of a different potency every time.

My last grow was in hydro (NFT nutrient film technique) with the plagron hydro nutes line, 400w hps (cant put more, growing indoors here is illegal - however when small grows are found they usually only confiscate the plants and grow equipment without making too much of a deal about it). The strain was the og#18 from reserva privada. It didn't smell much during the grow but after 2 months dry (of which 5 weeks in jars) an omnipresent but smooth diesel odor with hints of pine and sand came from the buds and it was a pretty good smoke, of slightly less good quality than the og#18 i tried in amsterdam but with a really nice medical effect. All in all quite a few things messed up during the grow (plants had a crazy stretch at start of flowering and unfortunatly i couldnt visit my grow room for a couple of weeks at the time, when i came back half the top colas were less than 10 cm from the hps, most of them showing signs of burn). Eventually 120g of dried bud came off and 4g iceolator from all the popcorn and trim (about 25g popcorn).

My grows before this one were more like trials ( I harvested a total of 180g out of chaotic grows) as i had many concerns with having to hide the grow areas whilst builders would come daily to work in my appartment (i live in a shared student appartment, with 3 other greenboys) and i had to move the plants daily to rooms in which they would not work.

THE CURRENT GROW :

7 october 2013:

I germinated 3 dark devil and 3 big devil xl. 1 big devil didnt germinate (first time ever so far out of the 50 seeds ive done till now) and one didnt survive being planted as she never penetrated the surface of the soil. So i have 3 dark devils and one big devil xl growing. I placed them under 80w cfl @2700k (i know this ain't good ill upgrade to 150w 6400k cfl - or something similar - next grow). Average temps : 27-30c and average humidity 55%, lights on 24h.

17 october :

I transplanted them (they were about 10cm) into 18l square pots (in which i think they will stay till the end - i might try one dark devil in a 25l pot to compare if the 18l get pot bound). I watered them the day after the transplant as too avoid stressing them. Placed them in a 60cm*60cm*160cm tent with 125 cfm vent, 250w growlux hps with cooltube and a tent ventilator blowing straight on them to make them a little stronger (at least i hope this is what it does). It was 30c the first three days but i managed to cool it down to 27 which it has been till today.

21 october :

Leaves look big enough to start foliar feeding without having the plants bending under the weight of their wet leaves. I foliar feed with a ph of 6-6.5, please warn me if this is wrong :). I also placed a reflective hood on the 250w. I didnt do this the 17th because wanted to avoid stressing these autos.

28 october today :

Theres a noticeable plant growth acceleration since i started foliar feeding but it is most likely because the plats are meant to grow nice and fast from now on.

PLANNING :

Throughout my whole grow i will be keeping the water ph at 6.4-6.8 and the foliar feeding (up untill bud sites form) ph at 6-6.5. My temp at 27c and i will try lower it to around 25.5c at the end of the grow for denser nuggets and to try and get more of the dark color out of those devils. My humidity is always around 40-55, i dont do anything to adjust it but i doubt that its my grow's limiting factor at the moment. My nutrients are from the make elixer. They are organic soil nutes bought at my local growshop (which aint the best, its meant for big commercial growers that are in it for the $$). I will upgrade to fox farm or something next grow to see the difference. The grow medium is plagron light soil mix.

OBJECTIVE : HARVEST NEARLY EVERY MONTH

My objective is to harvest every 35-40 days so i grow 65 day auto strains (which i think will take me at least 75 days to finish). I have a tent of 60*60*160 and a G-tools closet of 78*118*176 cm
G-Kit Bonanza empty (1m2) |
I will use the tent as the first month area (not veg area as they will start bloom before they are out of there) and the closet for finishing the flowering. I have just ordered a pack of 10x advanced biodiesel mass which i will start in about a week for the next grow.

(the top right one in the pic is the nute thirst one at the moment)

Hey there Madmunchies, thanks for tuning in!

The biggest of the four showed some bright green/yellow coloring in the new growth areas. I believe this means she is hungry and wants more nute (which is why its only happening to the biggest of the four so far) so i gave them all a whole load of water with 0.7 EC and will check her out tomorrow to see if all is good or if i have to add more nutes to my water (i am currently at half the recommended and i am going to try to give the plants exactly what they need since i have time to check on them several times a day). I jsut ordered advanced biodiesel mass seeds which i will be running next (germ in a week or two). Since the four ladies are going to be growing fast for the next month i will try to post a daily picture so you can follow them ;).
Thats all for today! Any comments or advice/criticism would be much appreciated (not only on growing but also the presentation of my journal).

So we are at day 24 from germination, they are growing fast i expect them to start showing signs of flowering in about 5 days - a week. The dark devil on the bottom right corner of the picture is still yellow however less than before. My last feeding was before yesterday with an EC of 0.7 more than the water's original EC (which was 0.5, but i dont have the $$ for a reverse osmosis atm) so my next feeding (tomorrow or the day after) will have a relative EC of 1.2 (the recommended level) hopefully the plants should get all the MG and FE they seem to crave. I made a slight mistake by foliar feeding during the day the leaves show signs of burn I believe this is because of the light rays being concentrated on some spots due to water drops on the leaves after the foliar feeding. From now on I will only feed right before the dark hours (the lights go off at 2 hours after midnight :p ). I also noticed some darker (blueish) coloring of the leaves of the two non yellow dark devils. I think this is because of the lower temps ive had the past two days (18c at night and 24.5-26.5 when lights are on) and the purple genetics possible affect this aswell. Thats all for now, im currently preparing the next closet to which the plants will be transferred in a week or two.

Day 27 :
These gals are doing great, the biggest was yellow this morning but i gave them all a good feeding with bloom stimulators at 1/3 of the recommended EC. If the plants do no respond very well i will flush with enzymes diluted in water to set the soil to null to avoid nute block-outs or any other related problems. First signs of female preflowers showed two days ago and it looks like the bud formation will start soon! Im pretty stoked about those three red plants! It said on the pack that there was an 80% chance of them showing red coloring (which i read as there being a chance that none of them color as well as all three of them coloring) so ill try lowering the temps at the end of the cycle. If anyone knows any other ways that might "push" them or give them a higher chance of showing the dark color tones (purp growers out there?) i would really appreciate your two cents! Here are some pics of the last few days and this morning (in order) :

Day 28 :
Heres just a little foto update of today, the plants seem to enjoy yesterdays feeding, my temps in my house are getting cold and the genereal heating isnt working well so im having a hard time getting the temps at 26-27c but i doubt the 24.5 i average at will be much of a problem.

Day 29 :
Im pretty impressed with the daily growth ratio at the moment the coming two weeks are what i expect to be when they grow the most as it is the stat of their flowering and many bud sites will hopefully form! (the fun part begins :p). However the heating in my house messed up completly and is broken now and luckily its hailing outside half the time and its like 15c in here... I filled the closet in which my tent is to try an get it warmer but its been at a lazy 21.5-22c all day...and was 17 overnight. This has caused the three "dark" plants to show blue hues on the perimeter of their leaves but apart from that it looks cool i doubt this is good to have so early in the grow. Anyway i just recieved a 10 pack of advanced biosdiesel mass auto seeds today which i will be germinating soon! Which means these four ladies are going into the big closet under the 400w soon.

Day 30 :
Just two pics, dont have time to post more atm. Btw i put the reflective hood upside down to get rid of the zebra effect of the light for these shots.

Day 31:

So were nearly halfway! I just starting germinating 10 auto biodiesel mass of which i will be growing 9 in the tent then 8 of them will bloom in the closet (ill discard the two weakest/smallest phenos). I spent most of the past night setting up the closet and the four devils are in it now, under the 400w hps. They have loads of space and i hope i will see more horizontal growth than if i would leave them in the tent. The temps are higher again around 25.5-28c which is what im looking for right now. I will transplant three of the devils into 25l pots (they are currently in 18l) and will be using one as reference to check the difference if there is one at all. Enough talk here are the pics :

Day 34 :
Ok so i transplanten the three less tall ones of the 4 into 25l pots (and one of them is in a 25l smartpot to see if there is any noticeable difference) however the transplanting of two out of the three wasnt great and i broke off some of the roots around the edges of the soil mass. How do you guys transplant from big pots into bigger ones? I sawed off the bottom of the pots and just pushed the whole soil bloc straight through this seemed to work best. I couldnt get it out of the pots without everything breaking and crumbling any other way.. Anyway they seem to have endured a little growth setback of a day or two but still look very healthy and will pick up soon! here are pics from after the transplant till today :

Hey frankiez thanks for the kind words! An ye im pretty curious about what the buds will look like aswell, so far so good!

Day 36:
The DD i havent transplanted is stretching like crazy - i saw a youtube vid about how to keepp autos short and the guy transplants them at the same time as they are meant to stretch and it results in small compact bushy autos that have nothing else than buds ! Im afraid that the pants will be a little less tall than they would have otherwise been - and that this will slightly lower the yield - but atleast i dont have to tie them down too much (as my closet is only about 165-170cm tall). The buds that are the furthest in the cycle are already starting to smell like nice fresh indica (to me like a mix of bubba kush / bubblegum like those really compact hard dark colored indica nuggets that just smell like plain old quality ganja - but then at an early stage of flowering). I believe these gals are going to stink up the whole appartment when they are near harvest ;). Anyway enough talk here are the pics : The stretching dark devil has been tied down twice so far and responds well to it, im going to try make her spiral round a bit (the one with the red strings) and the big devil xl (meant to be the biggest according to breeders description) i just tied with the white string to get her down a couple of cm so that all plants eventually have close to the same height.

Day 41:

All is doing fine, im worrying a little about curling leaves in the buds but all climate conditions seem alright. I gave them a pretty strong feeding a couple of days ago maybe my ec was a little high (2 including tap water ec which 0.5). It looks like two of the dark devils are on time and the third DD and the big devil are going to take a little longer. The buds are finally starting to grow and smell like they should :) i noticed a had a 250w ballast running a 400w lamp a couple days ago so i bought a new 400w ballast and the light it quite a bit brighter (pretty dumb of me not to have realised that earlier...). By pulling down the top of two of the plants they now have an even canopy of future bud sites. I hope they stay leveled up like this it would come in pretty handy! The first pic is of the big devil xl and the last one of the DD that stretched alot and will be coming in later than the other two :

Day 44: (2 days ago)
All are doing well, leaves curling up round top of plant an bud leaves curling down for the most advanced purple devil and ive had some pretty cold temps (17c night 22c day) but got the temps back up now (18.5 night, 24-27 day). I flushed all four of them with 15-20l water with enzymes each yesterday to set the soil to 0 and will feed them again this afternoon or tomorrow morning - as soon as the soil isnt as soaking wet as it is now in any case. Love the smell coming from the buds it has a nice spicy side to it without smelling too sweet - just the way i like the indicas, i hope they will be like that when cured aswell. Enough talk here are some pics :

Day 50 :
After flushing i waited 2 days for the soil to dry a little before watering with nutes and because of that all the pants have a more or less present nute deficientcy (calcium for the most, iron noticeable aswell) but ive given them two waterings since and they seem to be doing fine. Every day the bud field is getting bigger stickier and smellier :p but its clear there will be about two weeks difference in harvest date (maybe even more) between the first and last plants to finish. The thc is coming along very nicely on the biggest buds it seems like its goin to be more resinous than the photoperiod og#18 i grew in nft hydro so im pretty stoked :) he are the pics :

Day 53 :

Theyr doing fine! Im trying to position them to get the horizontal surface filled up but i doubt ill manage since two plants are rather small (smaller than id expect from this strain, but it might be due to transplanting during their stretch period). Here are the pics (1st is smallest plant, then its thc production, then the biggest dark devil that i tied down a bit, then a top view of the big devil xl (this one has more sativa leaves and a bit of a hazy sativa-ish fresh smell coming on) and last but not least the dark devil with the biggest cola at the moment - and its the only one thats purple (completly purple with tiny green spots now and then)) :

Day 61 (pics from yesterday) :

plants are maturing the two small DDs have about 30%-50% orange hairs so i gave them a flush, planning on harvesting all plants the 20th as i leave on holidays after. The big devil xl auto finally is starting to swell its buds and surprisingly some hairs on it are orange aswell even though it looks like it can use atleast another three weeks. Anyway here the pics :

Hey its been a while since my last post! day 72 now, ive harvested two DDs already. The first the 15th day 69 and the second today day 72. I have a pocket x60 scope and although its hard to get the focus right i could just about see all tricks were more or less ready with some having the stalks starting to amber or darken along with the purple/blood reddish bud leaves (only with the first DD however). about 90% of the trichomes seemed to be white with only a few being partially transparent. The Big Devil XL is fattening up it looks like a bush of more or less uniform buds and the trichomes are nearly full grown - they started pretty late compared to the DD's but have been growing fast the past week, and there are more than i expected :)
