A Tulare County Sheriff task force Friday seized nearly 300 marijuana plants, as well as one pound of processed marijuana, at a northwest Visalia home. But investigators say the plants weren't all they found. The suspects, who were not found at the home in the 3000 block of West Payson Avenue, were stealing $2,000 per month of electricity to power the lights, fans and cooling units needed for the large-scale grow, according to a Sheriff's report.

The practice, which law enforcement officials say poses "huge danger" to neighboring homes, involves circumventing the Southern California Edison meter. And it's becoming more common. Without free stolen power, the overhead cost of an indoor marijuana grow would be too high, so suspects "routinely" bypass the meter, the report continued. The residence on West Payson was gutted – all carpeting and walls had been removed to facilitate the grow. Plants in three areas of the home were in different stages of gestation. Rough wiring was reportedly found running throughout the home into each of the growing areas. Edison was called to the home and together officials determined that $10,000 had been taken over the past five months.
