A second-grade teacher faced drug charges for allegedly smoking marijuana on John W. Luff Elementary School property.
Connie Wooton faced charges of possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, KCTV5's Heather Staggers reported.
Wednesday, the school principal walked by Wooton and smelled what she thought was marijuana. The principal called police, and Wooton denied having any pot, Heather reported.
She told police she'd last smoke pot on Saturday, but after a second questioning, Wooton told police that the last time she smoked pot was at lunchtime, according to authorities.
"Well, we do have some information that possibly the teacher, at least it's alleged the teacher, was using, if you will, marijuana during the school day, not in the school building," said Dr. Jim Hinson, the superintendent of the Independence School District.
The superintendent told KCTV5 News that at no time were any of the school children in danger, that she was not impaired when she was in the classroom with the students.
Police found drug paraphernalia in Wooton's car, they said.
They found a device called a one-hitter and a green leafy substance in the console of her car, they said.
Wooton was placed on administrative leave.
