One man is behind bars after being caught with more than five pounds of marijuana.

Odessa Police tell NewsWest 9, they observed a red 2006 Nissan Altima traveling in the 100 block of South Grant with an expired license plate.

A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was identified as 22-year-old Marvin Byrd.

When officers made contact with Byrd, officers could smell marijuana coming out of the vehicle.

Officers asked Byrd to step out of the vehicle and that's when Byrd immediately began fleeing the scene on foot.

After a short chase, Byrd was caught near Medical Center Hospital and taken into custody.

When officers searched the vehicle, they found a glass jar containing marijuana along with six individually wrapped bags of marijuana.

We're told the total weight of the marijuana was approximately seven pounds.

Byrd is facing charges of possession of marijuana greater than five pounds and for evading.
