The 420 Fotographer Collective: Advanced Cannabis Photography

Light is the one thing we can influence to our advantage. There are a few things you can do to help light up your counter or tone down the overhead lighting.

Make a cheap light box out of a cardboard box, wax paper, a sheet, or something else to diffuse the light. For the light source you can use bed side lamps or whatever. Lots of options. If you google DIY light boxes you will be inspired.

Off the top of my head, if you cut out big windows in a box, taped some parchment paper over the windows, presto there is a light box. Put the photo object in the box, place light sources around the box, and your subject should be well lit with no shadows. Maybe I will try to make one today too.

The harsh overhead lighting can be toned down with some sort of diffuser again like a sheet or thin barrier between the light and object you want to photograph.

Good luck and be sure to post your solution!

@SweetSue got any grow lights laying around you could play with?

I have my 3000K qb and the 3500K COBS keltic, and I’d forgotten I had them available.

Thank you UA. I’ll see what I have around. I just threw out a box that my latest canvas print came in, easily 27” x 40”. I’ll be having more photos printed on the 24”x36” canvases, so I’ll be sure to get more cardboard to play with. In the meantime I think I hung onto at least one of the larger slices. It might come in handy.

You've given me a lot to think about. I’ll keep an eye out to see if you get that example made up, and look around at some ideas. You can bet I’ll share what I work up. This thread is one of our best resources, IMHO.

Thanks again.

Just did a quick search. This is kinda what I was thinking. I might not get to making one today lol. I have agreed to help 420 Mag out with their IG and I have taken to scouring the media archives for worthy images to post.

Notice the beautiful light on the small subject. This is how I should be doing bud photos.

But you could make just one side to hold over the subject, or in front of your light source. You dont have to spend a dime to make something work. You would be shocked at how I light some things.

Oooo..... I’m starting to get excited now. :slide: I’m doing my best to get the resource materials out of my phone gallery and into 420’s so it’s useful to the membership, so I won’t be doing much photographing for a couple days. I’ll let you see my results.

Hi y’all here’s a few for you, week 6 and a half flower. I like the noir filter on my iPhone XR. And the dramatic filter. Noir

Sue here is a good example of another simple diffuser. My curtains. It softens and sends the light rays in all directions. So you aren't getting harsh shadows, bright highlights, and lets you capture more details. (just a quick snap with the phone).

I prefer the black and whites to the blurple as well.

If you look closely at my username you will notice I have accepted a role as Social Networker on IG for 420 Magazine. I am excited to learn some new things and bring 420 members photos to that platform. Humbled to be part of such a great team. I surprised myself a bit with this decision but I think it will be fun.

Feel free to tag me when you see incredible photos or DM me with the link.

Hey bud! Some beauty plants for sure!

I started this thread with a specific purpose and intent. You are welcome to join in on that purpose. Please go back to the start of this thread and read the introduction. While posting your images is great, this is not what this thread is intended for, as there are numerous “best of” or “Creme de la Creme” threads to show off your images.

This is the thread you come to when you want to up your photography game. Self study with support from those here with more experience.

After flying through tens of thousands of images the last few days, I have picked up a few easy and cheap tips we can pass on here to new photographers.

I am sure many of us have some form of cleaning material for your lenses, glasses, or cell.

I am seeing smudges on the lenses. Fog. Things that are blurring images or portions of images. I have a few things to deal with fingerprints, hair, or dust on my lenses. What do you folks use? Please note, the inside of my t-shirt or a soft kids toy has been fine on occasion lol, dont make me out to be some equipment snob lol.

The small bulb/fan was super cheap. The pen was closer to $15 or $20. Those small micro-cloths can be found at the dollar store for $2. Bastards. But you get two. There is ALWAYS a workaround. Just ask. (Sue...I haven't forgotten our light box project. I bought a roll of parchment paper just for that today.)

The other thing is a piece of plain white or black construction paper for background or a place setting. The white cardboard background under the 3 tools is the same white background in pretty much all my images lol. I got it from the dollar store for $1.50. Lying bastards.

Cleaning up dust, bud crumbs, and things of that nature around your subject/lens can make for a more focused image.
