The Thomasville City Council will hold an emergency meeting tonight in the wake of the arrest of City Manager Kelly Craver on misdemeanor drug charges.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the council chambers at 7 W. Guilford St.

Only one item is on the agenda – a closed session to discuss a personnel matter.

The emergency meeting was called by Mayor Joe Bennett.

Bennett would not discuss the agenda other than to say it was a personnel issue. According to state law, specific actions that might be taken by the council would have to be done in open session after a closed session.

City offices are closed today in observance of New Year’s Day.

Craver, 54, who lives in Greensboro, was arrested Saturday night. He is charged with one count each of possession of up to a half-ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to court records. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 25.

Craver was one of three people cited, and the only one arrested, at a home on High Rock Lake, Davidson County Sheriff David Grice said.

Grice said deputies had gone to the 100 block of Sunset Boulevard in response to an unrelated call. The houses in the area are poorly marked and the deputies were trying to find the right house when they knocked on the door at 196 Sunset Blvd., That’s when the deputies discovered the drug use, Grice said.

Also cited on the same charges as Craver were Lisa Lackey Menius, 47, of Greensboro, and Karen Annette Hamilton, 52, of Thomasville. The house is owned by Menius, Grice said.

When asked why Craver was arrested while the other two were cited and released, Grice said that Craver was "uncooperative" and wouldn’t answer the officers’ questions.

Craver was released on a $2,500 bond.

Craver has been city manager since 2006 and was an assistant city manager in Thomasville for several years before that.
