Shelby County, Tenn. - The Shelby County Commission has voted down a new marijuana ordinance, WREG has learned.

The ordinance, which would have legalized small amounts of marijuana, failed to pass the first reading, effectively taking it off the table for the time being.

The City of Memphis recently passed a similar ordinance. That measure officially went into effect on October 24.

It gives police options when punishing people caught with less than half an ounce of marijuana.

They can still get the misdemeanor or now can pay a fine or do community service.

Although a win for some marijuana supporters, it by no means legalizes it.
