A Polk County teacher who works at a high school inside a state juvenile correctional facility and her husband were arrested this week when detectives said they found the couple growing more than a dozen marijuana plants in their Lakeland home.

Miriam Boateng, 43, who teaches 12th grade at Sabal Palm School inside the Polk County Juvenile Correctional Facility, and Ransford Boateng, 52, who has a doctorate in electrical engineering from Yale University, were arrested after the search of their home Tuesday, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Detectives said they found a locked bathroom that had 18 cannabis plants supported by artificial lighting, air circulators and a hydroponic watering system.

The Boatengs were arrested on three drug-related charges each, including cultivating cannabis. They were released from the Polk County Jail on Thursday after posting $2,500 bail each.
