The new District Attorney Kim Ogg made some fairly groundbreaking (for Texas) announcements for Harris County in regard to how marijuana misdemeanors will be handled. According to NewsFix, following her inauguration she made the following comments:

"All misdemeanor possession of marijuana cases will be diverted around jail," Ogg said during her comments from the podium. I've never felt good about putting marijuana users in the same jail cells as murderers. It's just not fair, it doesn't make any sense, and our country is resoundingly against that."

It looks like it comes down to the severity of each case but Kim Ogg has certainly got the city talking on her first day in office.
