A drug dealer who was found with more than £300 in cash claimed it was his 'early Christmas money' when quizzed by police.

Dale Anthony Edwards was also found with 20 bags of cannabis valued at around £500 when police raided the house he lived at with his mum and sister.

Four cannabis plants were also found in the garden of the house.

Edwards, 24, of Woodfield Avenue in Flint, said he had turned to dealing the drug because he had run up significant debts because of his own cannabis habit.

At Mold Crown Court today, where he represented himself, he was described by judge Niclas Parry as a "hard-working man" who posed a low re-offending risk.

The judge told him: "You effectively became addicted to cannabis . You know the misery and the financial trouble that causes," Judge Parry told him.

"You decided to solve these problems by selling cannabis yourself."

Judge Parry told Edwards that he should understand that the sentence could go up to three years.

But he had the good sense to plead guilty and would receive maximum credit in sentence.

"It seems to be accepted that you owed a lot of money and that you were dealing to close friends.

"You are a low risk of re-offending and you are a hard working man."

Interviewed, he admitted that he had in the past been drug dealing to pay off a drugs debt but said that he had stopped doing it in the summer, in August of last year.

He said money taken from his bedroom was early Christmas money.

The telephones were analyzed and text messages revealed street dealing with people he clearly knew.

He sold some on credit and there were texts to one customer demanding immediate payment, said prosecuting barrister Owen Edwards.

Re-interviewed, he said that he had continued to receive some messages because people had not realized that he had stopped dealing.

He then said that he had been selling drugs for someone else for a small profit — and later claimed it was for personal use.

The prosecutor said that it was his case that it had been an on-going supply.

But Edwards was given a suspended sentence of 12 months, suspended for a year, and ordered to do 200 hours unpaid community work.

He must also wear an electronic tag and observe a curfew, staying in doors between 7pm to 5am.
