UK: Major Fire At Suspected Cannabis Factory In West Avenue, Handsworth Wood

Ten firefighters battled a major blaze at a house thought to have been used as a cannabis factory .

Crews from Aston and Handsworth fire stations were called after the roof of the address in West Avenue, Handsworth Wood , caught fire just after 4.20am on Monday, August 14.

The first floor and roof of the detached property were completely destroyed in the blaze.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokeswoman said: "We had a call at 4.22am on August 14 to an address in West Avenue, Handsworth Wood. "It was a 999 call of reports of a house fire.

"We sent two fire engines, one from Aston and the other from Handsworth.

"There were a total of ten firefighters. The last left the scene at 6.45am.

"The incident involved a severe fire on the first floor and the roof space of a detached house.

"This is a suspected cannabis factory. We requested an electrical engineer."

The gas and electrical supplies were isolated.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said the property was vacant and no-one had been arrested.

Photographs uploaded by Handsworth Fire show the gutted roof, wires and charred potted plants dotted around the loft space.
